I started today off by reading a few of Billy Collins' latest poems in his new volume titled "Horoscopes for the Dead."

A Question About Birds

I am going to sit on a rock near some water

or on a slope of grass

under a high ceiling of white clouds,

and I am going to stop talking

so I can wander around in that spot

the way John James Audubon might have wandered

through a forest of speckled sunlight,

stopping now and then to lean

against an elm, mop his brow,

and listen to the songs of birds.

Did he wonder, as I often do,

how they regard the songs of other species?

Would it be like listening to the Chinese

merchants at an outdoor market?

Or do all the birds perfectly understand one another?

Or is that nervous chittering

I often hear from the upper branches

the sound of some tireless little translator?

Patricia Wells new cookbook "Salad as a Meal" is a walk into the spring summer months. The Provence on a Plate recipe is easy and so delicious.. plus looks great. I'm just about to sit down and enjoy it.This week I plan to try the marinated shrimp salad for a girls night in..looks yummy, I'll keep you posted.

Elm Street hosted a wonderful event tonight at the New Canaan Library, Amy Chua, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" and Jed Rubenfeld, author of "The Death Instinct" were kind enough to spend the afternoon discussing each of their books. How lucky we are as a small independent bookstore to be able to provide such terrific events to our community.

Another amazing author will be at the New Canaan Libray tomorrow night. Conor Grennan, author of "Little Princes" a fantastic read that will move your heart. I can't wait to meet him and listen.

OK, The last Oprah Pick for her book club is Jonathan Franzen's "Freedom" which recently received rave reviews in the NYTimes Book Review. Do you remember that back in 2001 Oprah and Franzen had a feud over his book, "The Corrections?" Franzen made somewhat disparaging remarks about Oprah's book club after Oprah named his book as her selection, which then led to Oprah rescinding the invitation to appear on her show. Nice to see they are friends again. What a year Franzen is enjoying! We have plenty of copies, but it is flying out of the store so stop by soon.

I'm reading a very fun, quirky book right now..."The Tower, The Zoo, and The Tortoise" by Julia Stuart. Set in the Tower of London it is a silly romp through the British psyche. Think of the BBC's Fawlty Towers show.

Along with that I am also reading and learning from a book of moments of quiet. It is your meditation 101 book. I think with all the noise in our worlds we need to find quiet spaces and this book helps guide you there. "Finding the Still Point" by John Daido Loori will direct you through the initial stages of developing a place for meditation in your life...try it. What do you have to lose?? Even if you don't buy into the practice you will appreciate the direction.

I am so behind with my blog postings. BUT, here I am with a great recipe, an excellent book and keep your fingers crossed an amazing author event. Michel Nischan the head chef of The Dressing Room, Westport Theater's restaurant has a beautiful book, "Sustainably Delicious."It has many of the recipes featured in the restaurant as well as more. He totally embraces the local food movement, giving major support to "Wholesome Wave", an inner city organization based in Bridgeport bringing wholesome food to low income customers at affordable prices. Here is a terrific recipe from his book.

Easy, lots of good veggies and yummy. I love the crunchiness! Try it and stop by the store for the book. Mention you read about it on the blog and you'll get another 10% discount.

USE A SPOON CHOPPED SALAD

Serves 6
1 1/2 cups white wine vinegar
3 celery ribs, cut into 1/4 inch dice
2 carrots, peeled and cut into 1/4 inch dice
1 large red bell pepper, seed, cut into 1/4 inch dice
1 heirloom apple, cut into 1/4 inch dice
1/2 large cucumber, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/4 inch dice
1 cup each of the following; all sliced thin. radicchio,arugula & napa cabbage
3 TBSP good olive oil
seasonings to taste (sea salt, ground pepper)
1 1/2 cups crumbled local goat cheese
1/2 cup toasted almond slivers

Bring the vinegar to a simmer in a saucepan over medium heat.Add the celery and carrots.
Remove the pan from the heat.
When the vinegar has cooled, add the peppers. Cover and refrigerate til cold.
Strain the chilled vegetables through a sieve. Reserve the vinegar and vegetables separatel

Lastly,
Mix together the apple, cucumber,arugula,raddichio and cabbage in a lare bowl. Add 1/4 cup of the reserved vinegar and the oil and toss well. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add the goat cheese and almonds.
This is a salad that displays summer's bounty. Enjoy.

The Wasp

1oz. Smirnoff No 21 Vodka

1oz grapefruit juice

1 Teaspoon salt

In a shaker, add Smirnoff No. 21 Vodka and grapefruit juice. Stir and serve over ice in salt-rimmed glass.

1oz Jim Bean bourbon whiskey

6oz cream soda

Pour the Jim Beam bourbon whiskey into a highball glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the cream soda, stir and serve.

Tomorrow is the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day! Lots has happened in those years, some good, some not so good. The positive side of the day lies in the huge amount of people who recognize the important role we play in the direction of our beautiful planet. The not so good in the actual damage we have inflicted on our environment.What was called the"greenhouse effect" 20 years ago has been recognized by the majority as global warming. Not a condition in our future, but a reality today. We need to become more engaged in the issues that surround our world. We need to commit to being part of the solution. Everyday we make choices that influence our world, simple ones, but multiplied over and over become substantial. Drive less, recycle, BYOB (Bring your own bag), use less petroleum based energy, support farmer's markets, plant a garden, encourage alternate energy development, buy a hybrid or electric car, plant a tree! Crazy CT Storm

So here we are day four of the aftermath of the crazy CT storm. A Northeaster blew through here on Saturday and left us without power, without water, trees and wires all over the roads and schools closed.

Makes you realize the horrendous scale of Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. At least we have warm weather and crews all over the place trying to put the towns back together.

ESB has not lost power and we have some great storm picks. Pam is reading "Ordinary Thunderstorms" by William Boyd. A piece of fiction that explores how one chance occurrence can evolve rapidly into a life-leveling storm. She is totally enjoying it.

A classic storm tale is R.A.Scotti's piece " Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938." This detailed retelling of the 1938 hurricane that ripped across seven Northeastern states and killed 682 people will keep you turning pages well into the night even by candlelight.

"Not Without Hope" is a new book about a tragedy at sea that saw four friends embark on a fishing trip during a blustery day, with only one man returning two days later. Witnessing incredible heroism and unspeakable tragedy, the author Nick Schuyler creates a story of survival, friendship, resolve and courage. Stop by for a copy.

This week I am on vacation at one of my main haunts, Jackson Hole, WY I have spent many days here and never tire of the views, the snow, the skiing, the parks, the pace, the people or the soul. Went to yoga yesterday and the instructor read out of a really neat book, "365 Yoga Daily Meditations."

Good book for some thoughtful time...and you can't beat yoga for keeping you limber.

Went cross country skiing in Grand Teton National Park the other day...talk about beautiful. Snow, woods and the serenity of nature. I know that sounds like a cliche, but it is'nt. Life is good. Donate some $$$ to our National Parks, they are treasures. Check out their website. http://www.nps.gov/ This is one of my favorite books on the National Parks. The National Parks: Our American Landscape" by Ian Shive & Tom Kiernan. Great gift book.

Another beautiful book on the National Parks is " Silence and Solitude: A Yellowstone's Winter Wilderness" by Tom Murphy & Tim Cahill. Amazing photos of the park in the deep of winter.

Want to read a really great book set in Wyoming? Pick up " The Legend of Colton Bryant" by Alexandra Fuller. True story of a young Wyoming roughneck in the oil industry and the life shaped by the industry and the place. He is a heart warming character who will stay with you for days to come. Molly's pick is " Love is the Best Medicine" by Dr. Nick Trout. A heartwarming story of what two dogs taught one veterinarian about hope, humility and everyday miracles.

Lynne's most recent pick is "Caught" by Harlan Coben, an Elm Street favorite.

Coben's fans won't be disappointed as he once again delivers! This time the mystery involves a missing suburban teen, the sexual predator who might be involved, and the reporter who is doubting her instincts about her story. This roller coaster plot will keep you guessing...enjoy.

Just home from a really interesting event with author Lori Ann La Rocco, "Thriving in the New Economy." People could not stop asking questions. She is the senior talent producer at CNBC and her rolodex is chock a block with major names of people who KNOW what is going on. Personable, fun, informed and engaging are a few of the adjectives I could use to describe her. Plus she went up against the USA team playing hockey in the Olympics. That's challenging. Pick up her book, we have signed copies. She wrote it with the intention of seeing what the best minds in the business community were doing to survive this challenging economic environment. The Wife's Tale by Lori Lansens

Her journey is a poignant one and along the way we meet many wonderful characters. Lansens writes with great warmth and compassion and you can't help but root for Mary as she sets off on her journey of self dicovery.

Wow, if you foolishly missed Joe Hill at the New Canaan Library tonight you wasted an evening. What a great guy. His books are supernatural, spooky, creepy, but thought provoking. His writing is so tight and flowing..he haunts you. Not only that, but he gave out horns to the audience to focus on his latest creation "Horns." We have signed first editions in the store. Shadow Tag by Louise Erdrich

Louise Erdrich takes you by the hand and invites you right into the inner most part of Irene America from the first page. She doesnt just take you by the hand, she snatches you into a world, where you know the steaming locomotive she brings you on is heading for a wreck. Irene and her husband Gil, both with a Native American heritage, struggle with who they are in their marriage, and how they have come to use one another. Their three children keep them together and provide to the world the happy picture of a whole marriage and family of some envy in their sophisticated lives. But love and hatred provide a pendulum swing throughout the story, and where it rests will surprise and haunt you.

Bloodroot by Amy Greene

Bloodroot is Amy Greene's debut novel. That is good news for those of us who want to hear more from this wonderful writer. Set in East Tenessee in the shadow of Bloodroot Mountain, both magical and enveloping, the author gives voice to Byrdie, Doug, Johnny, Laura and Myra. Unforgettable characters, and most especially Myra who is born with special powers that are passed along generations of 'granny women'. Amy Greene takes us into their inner world of hurt and healing amidst the natural beauty of the surroundings. The imagery of crooked dirt roads, thick trees, leaf patterns and the ridges of fungus on bark seep into the narrative and placed me where I had never been before. The author gives a knowing view into the lives of these few characters that struggle and try to survive in that place. Like the bloodroot plant, with properties both poisonous and curative, the love shared and rejected in this novel is both fatal and healing.

I have been waiting to see if we get any snow. While waiting I picked up Lori Ann LaRocco's book "Thriving In the New Economy, Lessons from Today's Top Business Minds" Lori Ann is a senior talent producer at CNBC. The book chapters are broken into sectors of the economy with experts speaking to the challenges of the day. Very smart people with excellent insight. Jack Bogle, Steve Forbes, Abby Joseph Cohen,Larry Lindsey are just a few of the amazing individuals she has included. Interesting read. So Susan (Brain Child of ESB) and I had a very productive meeting with Anne (Financial Wiz-Kid) to discuss how we combat the forces that are working against the independent bookstores of the day as well as our own weaknesses. I can't stop thinking about it all. Always potential is in your vision.

My dog Jackson (look down the blog if you want to see how great he is) did not have enough fun today.That hurts me. Maybe that is what we should all be saying???? Did we have enought fun today?? And if we did'nt maybe we are in the wrong place. Or maybe there is a better way to do it????

Ellie Kreiger, Cookbook Author is Great!

So now I am home from the Ellie Kreiger event. Remember... she is the Food Network, host, as well as the cookbook author of "SO EASY." What an excellent presentation..she told everyone about her top ten ideas for starting good nutrition habits. Duhhhhhh keep it simple and that is exactly what she did. She is so real and down to earth in her nutritional ideas that it is a no brainer to change your unhealthy eating habits into better choices. So many of the audience questions touched on our toxic food supplies....wow...won't go there in this, but it is becoming more evident that people are worried about their food sources.

On that note the latest book from Michael Pollan is right on. He is quickly becoming the guru of the 21st century. BUY IT. It is easy to understand and attainable.

Ughhhhh Stomach Flu

Well I came home from work on Saturday and proceeded to enter the ughhhhh world of the 24 hour stomach flu. Not Good. BUT, while I was stuck in bed I read " Impatient with Desire" by Gabrielle Burton. It releases in March. It is the historical fiction account of the tragic Donner Party. A group of 87 pioneers who headed west to California only to be trapped for 4 1/2 months in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The story is'nt pretty with only 48 survivors making the final journey into California, but the admiration I felt for the strength of these early Americans was great. Robot vacuum cleaner

Ok, so every night ESB needs to clean the carpets...well no one really wants to run a vacuum.... so we will be entering the 21st century and putting a robot vacuum cleaner on our staff. It does'nt get grouchy, works through the night and hopefully does a pretty good job. We are still anxiously awaiting Courtney Rein's review of these appliances before we plunk ESB's hard cash on the line..but I feel this will be resolved before the end of the weekend. Love to hear your comments if you already have one.

Rosie has a new espresso machine!
We love our neighbor Rosie and all their yummy food. They just got the "rolls royce" of espresso machines. I test drove it this afternoon with a macchiato and buon!

I'm off tomorrow and plan to take Jackson out early for his run.

Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chavalier

Based on the real life character, Mary Anning, a fossil hunter in England in the mid 1800s who unearthed major fossil finds before the word dinosaur had even been coined. The reader is transported to the cold wet beaches of Lyme Regis, England where two friends discover fossils together in a pre Darwin world where evolution is'nt a concept and nobody wants to believe that God did not, as one of Chevalier's characters puts it, "plan out what He would do with all of the animals He created". An absorbing read threading the science of the day with society's class consciousness as well as a tender tale of friendship.

What have I done to my back? I spent the last day and a half on the sofa and the only galley I had at my fingertips was ELIN HILDERBRAND'S "THE CASTAWAYS". I have not read one of her novels until now, because as a devoted annual visitor to Nantucket, I've questioned whether any author could do the Grey Lady justice in a beach read. I started the novel, flat on my back, at 5:30 yesterday and by tea time this afternoon I was finished. The perfect length for a beach read, and also for healing an ailing back. The four young and appealing couples who are the best of friends are united by their love of their life on Nantucket, their families and the deep friendships with each other. A sailing accident claims the life of one of the couples who have been suffering their own personal tragedy and marital discord and send the other couples into various states of grief. The mystery surrounding the accident brings about surprising discoveries of the relationships between the individuals. Good summer read!

Monica's Latest Read - Updike

I have just finished reading John Updike's masterful posthumous collection of short stories, "Tears of My Father." Although all of these stories have been previously published in different periodicals, reading them as a collection is illuminating. For those who have followed Updike's writing, there are familiar themes of love, aging, adultery, decrepitude, lust, life in middle America, hope and despair. For those who are new to Updike, this is a wonderful introduction to a writer who spent a long career charting the complicated inner landscape of rather ordinary people. The writing is taut and, at the same time, nuanced as are the characters that people these autobiographical stories. We've lost one of our truly great writers but he has left behind a fine memento for us to relish.

What with Amazon and Walmart having price wars over best sellers...I found a book in our independent bookstore that will never see the light of day in one of those big conglomerates. It is utterly charming. The book is "The Whole Five Feet", by Christopher R. Beha,. In this literate memoir, the author decides to read the Harvard classics, compiled by the Ex president of Harvard, Charles Eliot and his assistant. The books measure five feet on a bookshelf. The premise is , If you can read these classics you can attain a very good liberal education..and possibly a more interesting life. The author has struggle with his catholic faith, the illness of a beloved aunt and his own perilous health issues. In the course of a year he reads all and cherry picks what is important to him to makes sense of his life and struggles. The writing is pure joy..modest, simple in only a good writer can do..but filled with deep issues to mull over in your head for a long time. This book is like sitting down with a very bright intellectual who shines a light on literature..and in the process you understand the reason for the classics..and how they effect the human soul.

"The Girl Who Played With Fire" by Steig Larsson
Wow, another amazing read from Steig Larsson. His first book "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" knocks your socks off! It is a dark journey, not for the faint of heart. Both books are set in Sweden, Larsson's home country. Although Larsson deceased in 2004 his audience is lucky to have these incredible tales. Electrifying!
