Sarah jumps off the stage when it comes to bringing you to her books and the historical content. Earth Day 2010

Tomorrow is the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day! Lots has happened in those years, some good, some not so good. The positive side of the day lies in the huge amount of people who recognize the important role we play in the direction of our beautiful planet. The not so good in the actual damage we have inflicted on our environment.What was called the"greenhouse effect" 20 years ago has been recognized by the majority as global warming. Not a condition in our future, but a reality today. We need to become more engaged in the issues that surround our world. We need to commit to being part of the solution. Everyday we make choices that influence our world, simple ones, but multiplied over and over become substantial. Drive less, recycle, BYOB (Bring your own bag), use less petroleum based energy, support farmer's markets, plant a garden, encourage alternate energy development, buy a hybrid or electric car, plant a tree! Remember YOUR actions matter. Educate yourself.

I recently viewed a terrific movie called "Fresh" which draws a picture of our food supply definititely making you THINK! Michael Pollan, one of the most notable writers on the subject of our food sources today has a number of thought provoking books to check out. Michael's simple statement on maximizing your health through diet?
"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

If you, like me ,are eagerly waiting for Steig Larrson's last book in his thriller trilogy,(to be published this spring,)..and need something right now, The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell is for you. Set in rural Sweden, a photographer travels to a small town and comes upon the atrocious deaths of many families. A district judge from the city realizes she has a connection to the case ,and through her, the thriller unravels a centuries old revenge. It spans time and continents mixing the taunt twist and turns, with historical facts. The combination makes this an exciting read.

Crazy CT Storm

So here we are day four of the aftermath of the crazy CT storm. A Northeaster blew through here on Saturday and left us without power, without water, trees and wires all over the roads and schools closed.

Makes you realize the horrendous scale of Katrina and the Haiti earthquake. At least we have warm weather and crews all over the place trying to put the towns back together.

ESB has not lost power and we have some great storm picks. Pam is reading "Ordinary Thunderstorms" by William Boyd. A piece of fiction that explores how one chance occurrence can evolve rapidly into a life-leveling storm. She is totally enjoying it.

A classic storm tale is R.A.Scotti's piece " Sudden Sea: The Great Hurricane of 1938." This detailed retelling of the 1938 hurricane that ripped across seven Northeastern states and killed 682 people will keep you turning pages well into the night even by candlelight.

"Not Without Hope" is a new book about a tragedy at sea that saw four friends embark on a fishing trip during a blustery day, with only one man returning two days later. Witnessing incredible heroism and unspeakable tragedy, the author Nick Schuyler creates a story of survival, friendship, resolve and courage. Stop by for a copy.
